In the Ashanti Region, the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) has initiated legal proceedings against 22 customers who have not fulfilled their water bill payments. The cumulative amount owed by these customers amounts to GH¢198,762.07. Despite disconnections and diligent efforts by GWCL staff to address the matter, the customers have not settled their outstanding bills.
GWCL has resorted to legal action as a last resort, having exhausted all alternative methods of retrieving the owed funds. While a portion of the defaulters have already appeared in court, the presiding judge at the Asokwa District Court has insisted that the landlords themselves must be present for the proceedings.
Ing. Edward Kwabena Agyekum, the Regional Manager for Ashanti South at GWCL, has appealed to customers to consistently settle their water usage charges. He emphasized that the issue of customers not being able to meet their payment obligations is linked to their mindset and behavior. As such, he called upon all citizens of Ghana to responsibly cover the costs of the water they consume. Timely payment of bills plays a crucial role in sustaining the provision of water to households.
The court proceedings related to this matter have been postponed and are now scheduled to resume on August 28, 2023.
