ECOWAS Military Chiefs have arrived in Accra for a conference discussing the recent coup in Nige

Top military officials from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) member countries have convened in the nation for a significant gathering focused on potential military actions in response to the situation in Niger.

Notably absent from this gathering are the Chiefs of Defense Staff from Mali, Burkina Faso, Guinea, and Niger. The primary objective of this meeting is to formulate effective plans for deploying troops to Niger with the aim of reinstating constitutional governance following the removal of President Mohammed Bazuom by a military junta.

The intentions of ECOWAS leaders to deploy troops to Niger have encountered strong resistance within Ghana.

Minority in parliament has announced its determination to oppose any endeavor by the President aimed at deploying troops to Niger.

ECOWAS has expressed its condemnation for the assaults carried out by armed groups in Niger, resulting in the loss of lives of numerous Nigerien soldiers.

On July 27, a group of soldiers, primarily from the presidential guard, took control of Niger’s President Mohamed Bazoum, leading to the dissolution of the constitution, the suspension of all governmental institutions, and the closure of the country’s borders.

Despite ECOWAS’ advisements for the military to transfer power back to the constitutionally elected President, President Mohamed Bazoum has remained under the custody of the presidential guard since July 27.

In a statement, ECOWAS lamented the series of attacks on Nigerien soldiers by armed groups and called for a restoration of constitutional governance as the solution to address the security challenges prevailing in Niger.
